Meeting/Progress Notes

August 9, 2017

Strategy to share with the congregation via newsletter (etc) storyboarding, inviting engagement with the wording and objectives, learning and social hour engagement.

June 28, 2017

Our primary goal for this meeting was to review the DUMB dreams we had been invited to consider at the last meeting. We heard at the suggestions, grouped the concepts into similar categories and propose the following three dreams for Bethlehem:

Stabilize: Recognize and embrace our strengths as a Christ-centered community. Seek to meet our financial obligations, understanding that we are in the world but not of it.

Strengthen: Seek to maintain our positive culture while also growing in cultural diversity, and broadening our reach to members of all ages.

Share: Increase transparency regarding the business side of being a church, increase communication, community ties and benevolence within and outside the congregation.

Comment and collaborate on the DUMB page.

In the Strategic Planning Meeting this evening, we talking about goal setting. We also talked about some of the differences between secular and faith based organization, remembering that:
“God does not require that we be successful only that we be faithful.”
~Mother Teresa

The question before us is “how do we (the congregation of Bethlehem) want to be expressing our faith five years from now?” One way to dream into the future is to create DUMB goals. The following is an excerpt from a website that describes the process. Following that is an example from my own DUMB goals and a explanation of the example.

We would like to encourage everyone to participate in the development of two or three DUMB goals over the next few weeks.

  • We discussed a few administrative items: meetings times, length, communication,...
  • Next, we did a roundtable discussion of favorite things about Bethlehem and concerns for our future. (Listed below.)
Appreciation Concern
The community Growth
The community Encouraging faith development in youth
Our Church Family Finances
The people Keeping it positive
Small, close family Broad growth & ministry goal
All Are Welcome Finances
  • Then we did a process assessment. How much of this work have we already accomplished? We believe the Ministry Site Profile and the draft Strategic Plan offer good starting points. These are attached to this page.
  • We decided that online collaboration will greatly facilitate our work, and our next in-person meeting will be on June 14th at 6:00 pm.
